Third Friday at gallery:SUHU will introduce some new available holiday themed pieces in the Mexican Folk Art style art of Su Humphrey. All painted with acrylic on canvas, you will delight in the brightly colored alebrije style deer, tin ornament style critters & angels; plenty of Peace doves; and Yes, an interpretation of the Holy Family and the 4 Wise Sheep will also be exhibited. Oh, and guess who is riding in to town and to getting ready for the Holidays!!! (The picture will give you a little hint!) Gallery hours W-F 12-3, Sat 10-2, First & Third Friday Evenings 6 – ???

The Love Dance
For the month of October, gallery:SUHU has been quietly celebrating both the local Valley of the Sunflowers project AND Dia de Los Muertos–Celebracion de Vida! The Celebracion de Vida will culminate on First Friday, November 4 and Saturday, November 5th, as we join with the local galleries and Red Bull in rolling out a big Dia de Los Muertos celebration. Our colorful, whimsical, family friendly calaveras have been very popular all month long, so there are only a few of those happy skeletons remaining. (In fact, so popular, we’re already beginning to show some of our planned Christmas/holiday work) There may be a few new skeletons that come out of the closet just for that weekend, but after that, they’re gone! Don’t miss out on these guys!

We started First Friday last week to show you new, fun pieces that are available at Gallery:SUHU. Whimsical Mexican Style Folk Art Paintings by Su Humphrey are definitely full of fun, color and life! Currently on display are a few pieces from the “alebrije” collection, “los Musicos”, the “tin ornament” collection, and the” animal guardian angels”; acrylic on canvas or on paper.
John Campbell has some wonderful pieces available, both framed and unframed that showcase his work in a variety of medium.
Tony Di Angelis has taken some of his work “on the road” for a one-man show in Tucson, but we have a very large new piece that has brought a new meaning to Big in this tiny gallery!
Hard to believe it’s First Friday already! And what does that thermometer say? We’re still reeling from the fun we had on ArtDetour weekend a couple of weeks ago! Did you get to see us in the New Times slideshow of the event? There were several pictures of the art inside gallery:SUHU; pictures of Tony DiAngelis creating a neat picture of the gallery (By the way, that picture will be on t-shirts and cards available at the gallery); a picture of John Campbell creating a piece of Scribble Art for a scribble art challenge; and even a rare picture of me! Some of the captions were off by one or so, so there were a couple of things that were credited to gallery:SUHU that actually did not belong, but it was very cool to see! Here’s a link in case you missed it: http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/slideshow/art-detour-23-32837288/
Anyhow, lots of fun happening here in Downtown Phoenix this evening! At gallery:SUHU, artist Tony DiAngelis will be here -Live, in Living Color- creating a new surprise piece en situ. There are lots of unframed John Campbell originals at very reasonable prices (along with his framed originals, of course.) Several small original, unframed Ziva pieces are also available; and, of course there are plenty of my own AnimalHealerART prints available for $25. New T-shirts have been ordered, but, alas, aren’t here yet…(very sad).
In the building tonight (which is actually called OPtic Studios, though there is no name on the building), is a super Fundraiser for the victims of the earthquake, tsunami and fallout disaster in Japan. The name of the event is: Phoenix Radiation Experiment 1 Utilizing Fukushima Daiichi Airborne Fallout.. There will be a video and music by ELEKTROBAHN. Here is a link to the Facebook page which will give you more info about it: http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/event.php?eid=152794614783942&index=1 It starts about 10 pm….. I believe it is a $10 donation at the door….
Oh, and the other big news is, the new Downtown Phoenix Journal is out and—>>> gallery:SUHU is on the map!!! Basically, anyhow. The map says 18. HAZEL. Then underneath is a listing of gallery:SUHU and Punkouture… we didn’t get to share the number with a number or even listed with the same number 18…. but we are there! Curiously, though, Cade Gallery and Atelier M who are also in the building weren’t mentioned….maybe next month. As I said, it’s a work in progress for all of us. There are a lot of good articles in the magazine, very worth a read, plus a very handy Pullout Map for First Friday happenings…. you can pick one up here at gallery:SUHU.
See you tonight! and Remember, gallery:SUHU is open Saturdays from 10 am – 2 pm; Weds, Thurs, Friday 12 noon – 3 pm, First and Third Fridays ArtWalk evenings from 6 pm until ???????
Namaste!
There is so much cool stuff happening with Art Detour, it’s amazing! Here in the Optic Studio building, Art is happening as we speak! (okay, as I speak!) Artist Tony DiAngelis is out front of Gallery:SUHU painting LIVE!!!! Other artists are at the other galleries, as well.
New works have been added, and there are some extreme values available for original pieces of art….framed and unframed of all sizes!
Come down and check out what is going on at my neighbor’s places, too! AtelierM, GalleryHazel, CADE Gallery, and Punkouture! Plus, there is a new exhibit of wonderful pieces by artist Yuko Yabuki inside the Optic Studio building.
You see? Could it be that simple? Maybe.
Those of you who are familiar with my ongoing struggle to get noticed as a business, specifically, a gallery will like this. After months of reaching out, signing up, following, liking, tweeting, honking, clapping, whistling, etc., anywhere or with whomever I could find that seemed relevant to the business and the area…a new map was added to the side of one of the buildings a couple of blocks from here showing the galleries in the area. Naturally, gallery:SUHU was not on it, as it was based on some older map of the area… I mean, it’s bad enough that the post office doesn’t seem to recognize the existence of this building (true story–great address if you do not want to receive any mail).
Shortly after that, I heard that a new map was to be published in a downtown rag, in conjunction with ArtLink which is the group that supposedly has been behind the Art Walk. Well, my experience with ArtLink has been very poor. The organization has quite a name, but Iwonder if it any longer exists, frankly, as they NEVER have responded to a single email or note that I have sent them about signing up, getting on the map, asking for information on participating, etc., in the past 8 or 9 months… you look at their website and it has a one line bit of information for something that happened a month ago, something that will happen in another month (this stuff is new, by the way) but has photos and information about last July 2010—-it’s a mess.
So, I sent a note to the magazine (Downtown Phoenix Journal) immediately when I heard they were to publish and to be dissemimating the info, to see if gallery:SUHU was on the map, or how to get the gallery on the map…Much to my surprise, there was an almost immediate reply! I was shocked! A real person actually responded! No, gallery:SUHU is not on the map, but my neighbor, HAZEL Gallery is. Very frustrating. But, the person who replied promised to stop by and chat, and get me on the list for the next version. Admittedly, I was happy to have the interaction, but unhappy that it meant another 2 months of not being on someone’s map.
It’s a great map. It does need some tweaking, as somethings are slightly out of place; and, of course, it needs to have gallery:SUHU on it. But what is VERY COOL, is that on page 9 of the February/March edition of the Downtown Phoenix Journal, is a one-third page color picture of gallery:SUHU !!! It’s all there…the funky Mexican Blue exterior, my gallery:SUHU sign with the address, the flowers, art in the window, the Welcome, Come on In sign next to the open door with my AnimalHealerART logo of the two noses together…. It’s Fabulous! You must grab a copy of the magazine! I have some at the gallery, as well! (So, I won’t whine [as much] for a little while!).
I do look forward to further interaction, at least with the Downtown Phoenix Journal, as they seem truly interested in keeping the local community cohesive and working for the greater good of consumers and business people!
Anyway, remember that we’re open Saturdays from 10 – 2 [sometimes longer], Wednesday – Friday 12 noon – 3 [sometimes later], First and Third Friday evenings from 6 until whenever…
Ok. Procrastination has been winning….but no longer. Here we go… once again, with conviction. Wow, do you remember that from your early music classes or speech classes? Yikes. And from someone who likes to chat, seems odd that there would be any difficulty in sitting down to write a little something. Anyhow.
Lots of stuff has been going on. Plenty of new works from the artists here in the gallery…including AnimalHealerART portraits. More people have moved into the building, so I’m no longer the lone wolf here. First Fridays are always fun, but remember that this gallery is open other days during the week and by appointment. Third Friday evenings are a great time to come in and spend some time, as the crowds are not pushing through, and there are other galleries in the area that are also open. Plan to stop by! There are some interesting restaurants not far from here, also, so make an evening of it!
One of the things that is so nice about having a casual and pet friendly gallery is getting to meet new people and sometimes their pets. Today, a Great Dane whose name is Tiny and his pal Coal, a Labrador, stopped in for a visit with their human companions…big dogs with happy tails handily filled this small gallery to overflowing with their Loving Heart energy…it was AWESOME!!!
They suggested that I have a special Black Dog Friday…..what a good idea! In fact, we’ll do it all weekend! Contact me during this weekend about doing your black dog’s portrait, and take 20% off. AnimalHEALERART can still work in a few more portraits to be ready by Christmas.

Last week, I sent two pieces -the size of 5″x7″ postcards- to participate in a Twitter Art Show benefitting a library in Norway. David Sandrum is the artist who lives in Norway and organized the project, based on the Twitter 140 characters in a tweet’ 140 artists were to participate incontributing a postcard sized original painting for this fundraiser to help purchase children’s books. Hopefully they will get there on time!
You can find more information on the project and David on Twitter and on FaceBook at DavidSandumArt .
